Geek Moment

So I ran across a way cool piece of software for my iPhone the other day. It’s called QuadCamera. It allows you to create a series of images, one after another, similar to the that Lomo camera the ActionSampler. Check it out, it’s fun.

As you may or may not be aware, I have a little blog, which I call the iPhlog, where I post unadulterated images straight from the iPhone. It was a challenge I gave myself: to create as beautiful images as possible with nothing but the phone’s camera.

Because the camera is so rudimentary, I’m forced to concentrate on quality of light and on composition to create a nice looking image. My goal was to make images that were interesting to look at, without running them through any post-production software, like Photoshop and the like.

Little did I know that there were so many people doing similar things. On PDN’s site they feature a photographer named Shawn Rocco who runs a site called Cellular Obscura, where he posts images from his Motorola camera. The difference being, as I understand it, he runs them through Photoshop, with limited tweaks in Levels and/or Curves, before posting the images. He’s got some very nice images on there.

I say, it’s a fun way to challenge yourself in an era in which we have a lot of tools to cheat make photography easier. And it’s way more convenient than storing and scanning all that damned 35mm film from your Lomo.
