I had a great time at the 2011 PDN Photo Annual party in Tribeca on Wednesday night. Friend and fellow Philly photographer Ryan Collerd and I made the trek up to Manhattan for a whirlwind, whiskey-fueled evening. We rode in the elevator and searched for free drinks with one of my photo-crushes, portrait photographer Chris Buck, and even got in brief visits afterwards with my way-cool brothers.

Philly was well represented with 30-under-30 winner Katrina d’Autremont, the crew from Wonderful Machine and photo consultant Neil Binkley all in the house.

I was a finalist in the Corporate Design category for work that I did with the Brooklyn-based design firm Generation for the College of Wooster in Ohio. A big shout out to Generation’s Creative Director Jenn Galvin and former Art Director Rachael Bruno for their great help with that project. Here are the winning images and you can check out more corporate and institutional images at my portfolio site.

I just learned yesterday that this little project was awarded an honorable mention in the 2009 Altpick Awards. Yay! Thanks to all the people who allowed me to photograph them over the few days that I was there. And to all the wonderful judges.

Here are a few images from that little project:

First, I’ve launched a dedicated site for my ongoing Philadelphia Polling Place Project. It was put together by my good friend Robert West. Check it out. And for all of you on my mailing list, keep an eye out for a postcard with the info about the launch.

On that same note, the Committee of Seventy, an election watchdog group here in Philly, has highlighted my voting project on their homepage. Seventy is a fantastic organization and I’m deeply honored to be linked by them.

I was also notified that my portfolio was selected in the Portfolios of the Month section by the good people at Photoserve. Check out the rotating slideshow on their homepage.

Now I’m signing off for awhile to get some work done. Please keep your voice down.

I received word yesterday that two images from my “Behind the Curtain” project on weird Philly polling stations were given a “Chosen” honor from American Photography. From the notice:

“While your image will not appear in the book, it was one of only 171 images from a record-breaking 10,100 submitted to receive at least 2 votes and is therefore eligible to appear permanently on our website…”

So, while not the highest honor they give, I’ll take it. It’s my second year being included, though I got two images in this year, as opposed to one last year.

As for next year, I’m hoping they add new categories as opposed to just “Selected” and “Chosen”. My suggestions would be “Picked”, “Preferred”, “Tagged”, “Got the Nod”, “Pegged” … you get the gist.

So, I got a call yesterday from my friend and colleague Nate Johnson, a true modern renaissance man (brewer, painter, rock star, designer, dog-lover, bike-builder. Jeez Nate, leave something for us mortals).

He told me the annual report we and his colleagues, Kara Schlindwein and Brian Poliakoff, put together for the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce won a Pepperpot Award from the Philadelphia Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

We had made portraits and profiled GPCC members: big businesses (like David Cohen of Comcast, pictured) and small.

Though I’ve never heard of the PRSA, I’m psyched and especially happy for the dudes over at the GPCC. And the awards ceremony should be a good excuse to wear my new gray suit. Sweet.
